Etta James Dead at 73: 'At Last' Singer Dies After Leukemia Battle

Getty Images
Etta James, the powerhouse singer who combined blues, gospel and R&B and emerged as a major star in the '50s and '60s, has died after a long battle with leukemia. According to CNN, the sad news was confirmed by her friend and manager, Lupe De Leon, who revealed that James died in a Riverside, Calif., hospital. She was 73.

Best known for her 1961 version of 'At Last,' James enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned more than a half-century. Her string of hits began with 1955's 'The Wallflower (Dance With Me, Henry)' and continued with such classics as 'Spoonful,' 'Something's Got a Hold on Me' and 'Tell Mama.' Over the years, she won six Grammy awards, and in 1993, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The singer's life was not without hardship, however. Her popularity declined in the '70s and '80s, and she struggled for years with an addiction to heroin. While she earned plaudits for the 1988 "comeback" album 'Seven Year Itch,' recorded after she'd completed a stint at the Betty Ford Center, health troubles continued to plague her throughout her life. In addition to leukemia, she spent recent years grappling with dementia, Hepatitis C and Alzheimer's disease, and in January 2010, she was hospitalized for sepsis.

Anonymous Hack Warner, Universal Music Sites After Megaupload Shutdown

Mega UploadAFP Photo, MEGAUPLOAD.COM
U.S. Senate majority leader Harry Reid has announced the vote on the controversial Protect IP Act will be postponed which comes as a major victory to Internet protest group Anonymous who were successful in "crippling government and music industry sites" Thursday, Jan. 19.

Their actions were in response to file sharing-site MegaUpload being shut down -- with seven executives, including MegaUpload's founder, being indicted -- by the U.S. government following the uprising and protest earlier this week over the PIPA and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bills.

"Within minutes of the site being shut down, and DOJ (Department of Justice) releasing its statement, Anonymous sprang into action and started taking down a ton of sites -- including websites for the DOJ, the US Copyright Office, Universal Music, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the MPAA and a bunch of other sites," a statement on Anonymous' site said.

Lana Del Rey: Can Artifice Survive in the Age of Adele?

Lana Del Rey, AdeleDana Eldeson, NBC | WireImage
2011 was another dismal year for the economy. With U.S. layoffs soaring, European protests raging and 'Occupy Wall Street' dominating North American news all fall, the recession was etched into our collective psyches. Yet somehow the music industry saw a boom in sales after a seven-year slump thanks, in large part, to Adele.

The British songbird was a commercial and critical success, selling over 6 million copies of her Grammy-nominated sophomore effort '21' and occupying most critic year-end lists. '21' debuted atop Billboard's charts and spent 16 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1, tying the 'Titanic' soundtrack from way back in 1997.

Adele embodied authenticity by refusing to fit into pop music's superficial and sexed-up landscape; she broke its mould altogether. Adele simply stood on her own laurels as a great singer. No bells, no whistles, no fireworks-blasting boobs. Despite wallets being tight, people shelled out in record-breaking droves.

Florence Welch Shows Off Retro Bikini, New Boyfriend in Brazil

AKM Images
Florence Welch has always been known for her unique, vintage style. The Florence and the Machine singer has made her love of retro clothing quite well known, but who knew that it extended to bathing suits?

As Us Weekly shows, Florence opted for a '50s-style black bikini while hanging out on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The singer was vacationing there earlier this week and, as the gossip magazine reports, apparently has a new boyfriend.

Pantychrist Singer Charged With First-Degree Murder of Hamilton Man

Pantychrist
A punk singer for the Hamilton, Ontario, group Pantychrist was charged this week with first-degree murder in the death of Jessie Kovacs, a 55-year-old disabled Hamilton man.

According to the Hamilton Spectator, Danielle Delottinville, 28, was arrested without incident Wednesday along with two other men: George Cooke and Matthew Cooke. Kovacs was found in his apartment on Dec. 22 tied and taped with his hands behind his back. Police suspect the victim had been dead since Dec. 19 in what is believed to be a case of a botched robbery.

"Patty Wacks" Rees, who was in Pantychrist when it formed in 2003, said Delottinville's personal life "started spiraling" soon after the group started. The band had disbanded for some years but had been performing again as of last year. Kovacs met Delottinville last year and enjoyed listening to the group.

David Lynch Is Obsessed With Coffee

David LynchPeter Wafzig, Getty Images
There are some things you just can't live without. For director/musician David Lynch, it's the fabulous fragrance of coffee. Our colleagues at Huffington Post Culture have started a new series, Obsessed, in which famous figures and unknown fanatics alike gawk about their favorite things.

"I am pretty much obsessed with coffee," Lynch writes in the inaugural column. "I've been drinking coffee on a regular basis since I was in the ninth grade. In the ninth grade, I met my soon-to-be good friend, Toby, on the front yard lawn of my girlfriend's house. And during that first conversation with Toby, he happened to tell me that his father was a painter, a fine art painter. Hearing this news that an adult could be a painter -- an explosion went off in my head and from that moment on all I wanted to do was paint. And for me, the world of a painter held much coffee."

Adele Nominated for NAACP Image Award

Kevin Winter/Getty Images
2011 will forever be known as the year that everybody went friggin' nuts for Adele. The singer has spent a record 16 weeks at the top of the charts, tying the record for the 'Titanic' soundtrack -- her heart will go on, and on, and on, and on -- adding to a long list of accolades far to lengthy to name right now.

Most recently, Adele's tearjerker, 'Someone Like You,' off her sophomore album, '21,' has been nominated for Outstanding Song at the NAACP Image Awards. We'll say that again, Adele has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award, according to Billboard.

It's no secret that 'Someone Like You' is an undeniable, transcendent force of nature, able to pry the tears from even the most stoic pair of eyeballs -- as evidenced by a spot-on parody given on 'SNL.' Even so, that doesn't change the fact that Adele is unquestionably white and nominated for an award meant to celebrate the achievements of African Americans.

One Model Nation Travel Back in Time With 'Transmission' -- Song Premiere

Jen Starr
Dandy Warhols singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor has been getting involved in some really in-depth alter egos recently. His new band, One Model Nation, is a conceptual group: Imagine if Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was set in 1977 Berlin and sounded like Joy Division.

"This is the first track we created. That half-tone bass riff just kills me every time," Taylor-Taylor tells SPinner. "Jon fell at his postgothindustrial best."

Conductor Stops New York Philharmonic Concert After Cell Phone Interruption

Alan GilbertGustavo Caballero, WireImage
Whether you're at the movies or the symphony, before the show you are always prompted to do one thing: Turn off your cell phone. But at a recent performance of Mahler's Ninth Symphony at the New York Philharmonic, someone did not heed the warning.

According to the Daily Mail, venerable conductor Alan Gilbert was on the final page of the chilling piece. The strings had come to roaring crescendo as some of Mahler's most emotional music sauntered toward the end. Suddenly, the calming silence was broken.

A marimba sounded. But not just any old marimba -- an iPhone marimba.

A front-row spectator had not turned off his phone, which chimed and chimed during the Philharmonic's epic climax. Classical music blogger Michael Jo reports, "When we reached that passage, as Alan Gilbert turned to the first violins and the sound grew ever more hushed and veiled, the unmistakable chimes of the iPhone Marimba ringtone resounded loud and clear throughout Avery Fisher Hall."

How Rock Stars Roll: 22 Photos of Musicians Riding Random Vehicles

XPOSUREPHOTOS.COM
When Adele was recently spotted in the Everglades with her new boyfriend, we were pretty happy for her. Then, one of us pointed out that the photos of the happy couple featured them riding on one of those flat-bottomed airboats and it got us thinking: What other random vehicles have musicians taken out for a spin?

As it turns out, some rockers like to get around via camels, segways, go-karts, shopping carts (!), carriages, buggies and more -- and we have the photos to prove it. Check out the gallery below to see some of the biggest names in music, including the Beatles, Judas Priest, the Black Eyed Peas and Ellie Goulding, tooling around on weird rides.

Velvet Underground Sues Andy Warhol Foundation for 'Banana' Copyright Infringement

Hayley Madden,Redferns/Verve
Nearly 45 years after a banana appeared on their iconic 1967 debut album, the Velvet Underground are suing the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts citing copyright infringement and seeking unspecified damages.

According to the New York Post -- and also reported by Exclaim -- Lou Reed and John Cale claim the image's use on products like iPad cases and shoulder bags is deceiving, leading people to believe the group have allowed the "sponsorship or approval" to these products. The lawsuit was filed in a Manhattan federal court.

"It is not merely the graphic reproduction by Andy Warhol of a piece of fruit: it is the 'iconic' VU banana," the suit says. "Inasmuch as the Warhol Foundation has such a large number of Andy Warhol designs, all of which are presumably unique works that are highly valued in the marketplace, there would appear to be no economic need to include the banana design among the designs that defendant licenses," court papers state.

Lights: Nude Pics of Her Online Are 'Faker Than Meg Ryan's Orgasm'

LightsUniversal Music
Lights released her single 'Toes' last year but the Canadian electro-pop singer wants fans to know that online naked photos currently circulating and revealing basically everything except the toes aren't of her.

Lights, born Valerie Poxleitner, tweeted that certain nude pictures online claiming to be of the singer are fakes. "There are nude photos of someone on the Internet that are supposed to be me," she said. "They're not. She doesn't even have tattoos! Just to be clear."

Shortly afterward she posted the same statement on her Facebook page which resulted in hundreds of comments. "I need real ones so I can determine which ones are fake," one fan quipped.

Son of Yardbirds Drummer Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography Charges

Tribe.net
Simon Jasper McCarty, son of Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty, has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges. He faces 15 to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced in June. McCarty is himself a musician as well, and ran a foundation providing musical lessons and concerts for orphans in other countries.

McCarty was first apprehended in 2008 at the Hilo airport in Hawaii when photos of nude children fell out of his bag while a TSA officer examined it. Further investigation uncovered more than 400 still images and 200 video clips of child pornography stored on his laptop and external hard drive.

In House With The Wilderness of Manitoba: The Canadian Band Share Northern Secrets

The Wildernes of ManitobaDamon Dahlen, AOL
In House is AOL Music's series in which we welcome artists into our offices to play some music, chat with our staffers and, generally, just hang out. For our latest visit, we sat down with Canadian crooners the Wilderness of Manitoba to discuss their album 'When You Left the Fire.'

On a late October afternoon in New York, the Wilderness of Manitoba set out to teach a few pasty music nerds about the joys of Canada. "We just got the internet," multi-instrumentalist Scott Bouwmeester jokingly tells Spinner about his native country. "There's a lot of good things on there." A long way away from their home in Toronto, the band stopped by our Manhattan office to share a few tunes from their newest album 'When You Left the Fire,' available now via tinyOGRE. But before they struck their first somber chord, constant touring had given the five-piece a few lingering questions about the US of A.

"There are weird wars between certain states. Like Missouri and Kansas don't like each other," singer Melissa Dalton says after touring the Midwestern states. "Well, I grew up in the Balkans, so I'm kind of used to that. So it's not really new," banjo player Stefan Banjevic chimes in assuredly. "Yeah, the Kansas/Missouri feud is exactly like the Balkans," Bouwmeester sarcastically retorts.

Now in their 30s, the Quin twins have taken a look back at their career with their second DVD, 'Get Along,' which features tour footage, a trip to India and recordings from two intimate concerts in front of fans, friends and family.

Spinner recently caught up with Tegan to discuss the band's evolution, the sisters' relationship with their mom, who traveled with the band to India, how she and Sara have learned to coexist more peacefully and how they compare to Kings of Leon.

Lana Del Rey Is a Favorite on David Cameron's iPod -- Music Appreciation

Getty Images | FilmMagic
British prime minister David Cameron has always been keen to keep up with the cool kids' music. His everlasting praise for the Smiths has caused the band's liberal leaders to openly forbid the politician from liking them. Despite differences with his musical idols, Cameron's iPod continues to impress.

Recently speaking to The Telegraph, the Prime Minister revealed pop darling/lightning rod Lana Del Rey and Southern rockers Band of Horses are what he's currently jamming. But the statesman admits, a few questionable artists have begun to crop up amongst his MP3s. "Appalling" singers Bruno Mars and Katy Perry are "beginning to infect my iPod," Cameron tells reporters, referring to his daughters' favorite music. Del Rey's debut 'Born to Die' has yet to hit shelves -- will the conservative politician's support kill her blogger buzz?

Jake Epstein: 'Degrassi Star' Graduates to 'American Idiot,' Talks Drake and 'Glee'

Craig Epstein, 'American Idiot'Dancap
Actor/singer Jake Epstein is no stranger to angst. As Craig Manning on Canadian teen-soap 'Degrassi: The Next Generation,' the aspiring rock star struggled with everything from physical abuse and drug addiction to bipolar disorder. As Melchior in the touring cast of the hit musical 'Spring Awakening,' he faced oppression at school, the suicide of a good friend and a tragic romance.

Now, as one of the stars of the touring production of 'American Idiot,' the Broadway musical inspired by the
Green Day album -- currently in the middle of its run at the Toronto Centre For The Arts before criss-crossing the U.S. -- he suffers from a whole lot of crippling, agonizing nothing. Playing Will, a young man forced to stay home while his two friends leave to conquer their post-9/11 existential crises in the big city, Epstein remains glued to a couch for the whole show.

Epstein spoke to Spinner about the challenges he faces in
'American Idiot,' his love of Green Day, the idea of collaborating with his former 'Degrassi' costar Drake and those 'Glee' rumours.

Jay-Z: 'B----' Will Be Retired From Rapper's Lyrics?

undefinedJames Devaney, WireImage
UPDATE: In an interview with the New York Daily News, Jay-Z cleared the air about a poem that surfaced this week, which included statements that he would no longer use the word "bitch" since his daughter, Blue Ivy was born. The 'Watch the Throne' collaborator denied he ever penned the poem. "That poem and story are fake," Hov revealed.

A little over a week has passed since Jay-Z welcomed his newborn daughter Blue Ivy into the world. Since then, the Brooklyn rapper has released 'Glory,' a tribute song celebrating the infant's life. Now news is spreading that any future lyrics the Roc Nation founder puts out will no longer include the word "bitch."

According to NME.com, a poem has surfaced that reveals Hov has no interest in referring to women by the derogatory term. "Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich/ I didn't think hard about using the word bitch/ I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it/ Now with my daughter in this world I curse those that give it."

There's been no word from Jay-Z himself confirming the poem, but fans of the veteran MC feel the rumors that he'll kick the word to the curb are untrue. After all, many of his rhymes are littered with it. In 2001, the entertainer released the track 'Bitches & Sisters,' off his seventh studio album, 'The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse.' Then there's one of his most lauded songs, '99 Problems,' released the following year on 'The Black Album,' which delivers the line, "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one."

Shyne, Diddy Reconcile, Plan to Meet in Paris

undefinedAFP / Getty Images
After serving almost nine years in prison for assault and gun possession after shooting up Club New York in 1999, rapper Shyne has reportedly reconciled with his former mentor Diddy, who was charged in the shooting but acquitted.

In a Skype call from Paris, the former Bad Boy signee told MTV that he and Diddy have come to an understanding after speaking over the phone recently, and plan to meet in person in the near future, despite his prior allegations that Diddy was a "snitch."

"As far as Puff is concerned, that's been a long time coming," Shyne explained. "He had reached out to me twice while I was in the pen, but I just wasn't ready for it ... In retrospect, when you looked at the way he handled it, he held it down, he wore it. He ain't had nothing to say; always had good things to say. It was always, 'Yo, whatever Shyne need, we got him.'"

Big K.R.I.T.: 23 Songs for New LP, Industry Needs to 'Step Up'

undefinedAstrid Stawiarz, Getty Images
Big K.R.I.T. seems like he's been a part of the hip-hop scene for much longer than he has. His attention to detail has given him the edge over a long list of up-and-coming artists who believe in quantity over quality. The producer-rapper has never been one to "drop a mixtape" anyway. His first, 2009's 'K.R.I.T. Wuz Here,' and the 2011 sophomore effort, 'ReturnOf4Eva,' are projects in his eyes. Yet, neither was quite a mixtape nor official album. But both showcased his effort in crafting classic material.

Signed to Def Jam for two years now, the Mississippi native has been plugging away, working on tracks with everyone from Freddie Gibbs to T.I. 'ReturnOf4Eva' was his first release after being signed and it's been helmed as one of 2011's best mixtapes. He's primed to repeat that success as he readies his '4EvaNADay' project for release next month. K.R.I.T.'s debut LP, 'Live From the Underground,' is next up for release in June and though he sounds confident about what he has planned, the rapper remains tight-lipped about the specifics. He does, however, promise that we'll be getting more of what made us fall in love with his music in the first place.

The BoomBox sat down with the man born Justin Scott about producing for his hip-hop colleagues, playing the tuba and his appreciation for Waka Flocka Flame.

Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music Album to Feature Frank Ocean, More

undefinedVictor Boyko, WireImage
Somewhere in London, Kanye West and a crack team of singers and rappers are readying the album we're all going to spend the spring talking about. That's the takeaway following recent tweets from British songstress Marsha Ambrosius and rhymer Pusha T, two of the artists helping Yeezy finish his eagerly awaited, ridiculously star-studded G.O.O.D. Music compilation.

"In the studio with Frank Ocean, Big Sean, Pusha T, Manny Fresh :) Kanye West is on the way!!! I'm having fun today," Ambrosius tweeted on Sunday (Jan. 15), later adding that Jay Electronica had also stopped by the studio.

"Thoroughly enjoyed my quick trip to London," she added on Tuesday, still reeling from the experience. "Witnessed greatness. @PUSHA_T 'THAT VERSE!' & @BigSean 'Marsha Marsha Marsha.' KANYE!!! #1."

LL Cool J: Grammy Awards 2012 Will Be Hosted by Rapper

undefinedMark Davis, Getty Images
The 54th Annual Grammy Awards will finally have a dedicated person to command audience's attention throughout the prestigious ceremony. LL Cool J has been tapped to host the biggest night in music, which is an honor that hasn't been given to another entertainer since 2005.

"I'm thrilled to be part of Music's Biggest Night," the lauded rapper-turned-actor said in a statement. "I will always have fond memories of my first Grammy Awards and to now be hosting the Grammy show, in the company of so many other incredible artists, is a dream come true."

Seven years ago, Queen Latifah hosted the Grammys, and before her, TV hosts and actors such as Ellen DeGeneres and Jon Stewart have laid claim to the title.

Drake Condos: MC Selling Posh Pads in 'I'm on One' Video

undefinedBobby Bank, WireImage
When DJ Khaled debuted the visuals for his Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne-assisted hit 'I'm on One,' last June, fans had the opportunity to see the Toronto rapper spit verses in the comfort of his living room, as his condos were featured throughout the video. Now, news emerges that the 25-year-old 'Take Care' creator is putting the posh pads up for sale.

TMZ reports that Drake is selling the set of Miami condos, located next door to one another at South Beach's Marquis highrise. Originally, the condos were separate living spaces but the 'Headlines' rhymer turned them into one large location.

Last week, the listing for one of the condos was $1.9 million and the other was $599,000. The most expensive condo includes three bedrooms and three-and-half bathrooms and is 3,800 square feet with. The cheaper one-bedroom condo is 1,675 square feet.

Jon Heder Wanted Money for Jay-Z and Kanye West Song

undefinedGetty Images
As everyone knows, the best exchange on 'N----s in Paris' isn't between Kanye West and Jay-Z, the rappers behind the 'Watch the Throne' single, but rather between actors Jon Heder and Will Ferrell. "I don't even know what that means," Heder famously says, cutting in just after 'Ye's verse in a bit of dialogue sampled from the 2007 film 'Blades of Glory.' Farrell's memorable response: "No one knows what it means, but it's provocative!"

As it turns out, Heder really doesn't know what it means. In a recent interview with Fuse TV, the 'Napoleon Dynamite' actor said he's "not quite sure" why 'Ye and Jay sampled that bit of dialogue, but he figures it's a compliment.

Nick Cannon: Kidney Failure Cause Revealed

undefinedPaul Archuleta, FilmMagic
As reported by AOL Music, Nick Cannon is back to work after undergoing surgery for mild kidney failure earlier this month, and the entertainment mogul, TV personality and rapper-actor has revealed how his health scare has forced him to re-prioritize his life in a big way.

Nick and wife Mariah Carey already seemed to be loving parents before Nick's hospitalization, but the new dad told MTV News that he is focused on being a family man now more than ever before.

"Right now my kids are everything -- they're always going to be everything, but when something like this happens to you, everything else is shut out and you're just focused on them," he admitted. "So every second you just notice so many things ... it just makes it so much more poignant. I love everything that they do and just want to be a part of everything."

Rihanna, Chris Brown: Secretly Hooking Up?

It has been almost three years since Chris Brown infamously assaulted Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards. While you may have thought that there is no way Ri would ever go back to be in the arms that beat her, new reports suggest that the former couple have been secretly rekindling their romance for quite some time now!

Despite the relationship's violent ending, Us Weekly sources have alleged that Rihanna, 23, and Brown, 22, have secretly been hooking up for nearly a year. Apparently the pair "meet up very casually" to see one another and Rihanna "comes to see him anytime she's in L.A."

Fantasia: Antwaun Cook Accused of Cheating on Singer

A month after giving birth to their first son, it is being reported that singer Fantasia's relationship with Antwaun Cook is already on the rocks.

A source tells RadarOnline.com that the 'American Idol' winner's boyfriend has been stepping out on her for the majority of their relationship, which began while Cook was still in married to his wife Paula.

"Antwaun has been cheating on Fantasia all along, just like he cheated on his wife with Fantasia," the source revealed. "She was silly to think he'd remain faithful but it was wishful thinking, I guess. She purposely had this baby with him hoping he'd be a devoted father and boyfriend."

Santigold Disses Lady Gaga for Her 'Big Mouth'? -- Video

undefinedGetty Images
Four years after the release of her critically acclaimed eponymous debut, Santigold -- formerly known as Santogold -- has returned with a video for a new song called 'Big Mouth,' which picks up where her debut, and in particular songs like 'Creator,' left off.

The whimsical Cody Critcheloe-directed visual serves as a perfect accompaniment to Santi's new song, which was helmed by 'Pon De Floor' co-producer Switch and Buraka Som Sistema. 'Big Mouth' is exactly what you'd expect from that marriage of talents -- a song that is aggressive both in tempo and message, calling out various gum-flappers and tooth-chatterers who may or may not be Lady Gaga, whose name Santi appears to be chanting at 1:27, when a blonde mermaid gets eaten by a cartoon tiger.

While 'Big Mouth' apparently is not the official first single from Santigold's long-awaited sophomore album, 'Master of My Make Believe,' a "proper single" is said to be arriving next month, with the album to follow this spring, featuring contributions by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's Nick Zinner and The Bird and the Bee mastermind -- among other things -- Greg Kurstin.

Beyonce: First Post-Baby Appearance to Be at 40/40 Club?

As reported by AOL Music, new parents Beyonce and Jay-Z may be spending some quality time at home with their baby girl Blue Ivy, but that doesn't mean the power couple isn't already planning their next big move. For Jay, that means the grand re-opening of his nightlife hot spot, the 40/40 Club. And for Bey, that could also mean her first public appearance since giving birth to baby Blue just two weeks ago!

According to New York Daily News, Queen B is set to support her hubby at his club's big re-reveal tonight (Jan. 18) -- yes, tonight! The Manhattan lounge, where VIPs can drop a grand for preferred access to private rooms, recently received a $10 million dollar renovation.

The club's new gilded interior and 165-inch video screens will be enjoyed by tonight's party guests like Swizz Beatz and Alex Rodriguez, but all eyes will undoubtedly be on Beyonce -- if she shows, that is! Queen B gave birth to her first child on Jan. 7, and she is reportedly already eager to hit the red carpet and 'Party' once again.
